Smart Construction S.A., a leading construction company based in Chania, Crete, successfully completed the design-build renovation of Building 93, the fire station at the U.S. Naval Support Activity (NSA) Souda Bay. Awarded in September 2013 and completed in March 2015, this US Government project with a contract value of $2.2 million entrusted Smart Con with full design-build responsibility — from concept through to construction delivery — for one of the base’s most operationally critical facilities.
As the primary emergency response building within NSA Souda Bay, the fire station renovation demanded the highest standards of structural integrity, safety compliance, and operational functionality. The works encompassed comprehensive structural improvements, full modernization of building systems, and facility upgrades carefully designed to enhance the station’s emergency response capability and ensure it meets stringent US military safety and operational standards. Every aspect of the renovation was engineered to maximize the readiness and efficiency of fire and emergency services personnel operating within the base.
Delivering a design-build contract for a mission-critical facility within an active naval installation requires a unique combination of design expertise, construction capability, and the ability to work within the strict regulatory and security framework of a US military base — all areas in which Smart Construction excels. This project stands as a proud example of Smart Con’s capacity to take full ownership of complex defense infrastructure projects, from initial design to final handover.
