Apron Expansion at US Naval Support Activity – NSA Souda Bay, Crete
Smart Construction S.A., a leading construction company based in Chania, Crete, successfully completed the apron expansion project at the U.S. Naval Support Activity (NSA) Souda Bay. Awarded in July 2014 and completed in August 2016, this major US Government civil works project with a contract value of $12.3 million was delivered by Smart Con as subcontractor for engineering, management services, and civil works under prime contractor J/V SEMI EIFFAGE.
The project involved the significant expansion of the aircraft apron at NSA Souda Bay, increasing the base’s capacity for aircraft parking and maneuvering while enhancing overall operational efficiency. Works included the construction of reinforced pavement extensions engineered to withstand the demands of heavy military aircraft, improvements to the drainage system, and upgrades to ground support infrastructure — all designed and executed to meet the stringent technical and safety specifications required by US military aviation standards.
Spanning over two years, this complex civil engineering project required meticulous planning, advanced construction techniques, and seamless coordination with base operations and the prime contractor.
